| A bit of trivia for fans of Hitchcock, film noir, and even theatre geeks since a Tony nominated Best Play is tangentially related. In 1942 Bob Hope and Madeleine Carroll starred in the film My Favorite Blonde. This film is very obviously a comedic parody of The 39 Steps. If you watch the film, it suggests that Hitchcock must have approved of it and most likely provided unofficial assistance in its making. Within the next two decades Hitchcock very slyly incorporated at least 3 elements from My Favorite Blonde into 3 of his most celebrated films. True Hitchcock buffs should be able to spot the 3 elements and identify the films -- one element is obvious, but the other two are well hidden. In 2008 when I was in New York on a theatre trip, I happened to bump into an acquaintance of mine from Northwestern University. He was working in the marketing department for the stage production of the Broadway show The 39 Steps. He wanted me to buy a ticket since he knew I was a Hitchcock fan. I told him I had to pass and mentioned the 1942 film. Apparently he and the rest of the marketing staff had no idea that a previous spoof of their show existed. I told him to check out My Favorite Blonde, but I don't know if he ever did. In 2008 the Wikipedia article on the 1942 film made no reference to the Hope spoof. However, at least a decade later the Wikipedia article was amended to include a paragraph mentioning the connection to The 39 Steps. Before beginning this post, I went back to Wikipedia and the reference is now gone. Nevertheless, if you google My Favorite Blonde The 39 Steps, articles will pop up confirming the connection. These are just a few of the crazy things I think of when I wake up at 4:30 AM and can't go back to sleep. |
