I'm not seeing Woods til 8/16, but I've seen this behavior before this season. At Company, certainly. And at Strange Loop. And the Wednesday, June 1 matinee of Funny Girl had so much anticipatory cheering -- just the start of a song -- it was jarring. And then the lead's sustained notes at the act end were treated like Jennifer Holiday's. Since I wasn't having a comparable response -- not to revisit that topic -- I found it odd. But in some ways, it helped me remain in the spirit of the performance. I couldn't believe the fervor at first -- costume changes were applauded -- but decided it's in this revival's DNA. One can only imagine that it will increase with the star changeout.
There's an aspect to this which I attribute to post-Covid re-launch. I could be wrong about that. |
