I've seen the first four, and the series does indeed return thoughtfully and analytically to Woodward. Some episodes are bifurcated, more Newman is at the top. But the tag of ep 2 is a killer. And the series spends much time exploring the tension between Woodward's career goals and the presumed requirement that she do the heavy lifting in the parenting, raising 6 children (the 3 stepchildren are show to have spent much time with her).
In many ways, it's an overdue feminist prism on Woodward's career; she was arguably the more gifted actor (a topic raised repeatedly on the series) with early recognition forced to confront a perfect storm of obstacles: gendered, family-raising expectations; lack of quality roles, available or offered; presumption of stepping aside to enable the male ego. It's not an indictment of Newman; it's about an industry historically indifferent to women artists. |
