I’ve never heard that and I think Mr. Hawke is probably mistaken. The play had its gestation in 1945 or 1946, right after the end of WWIi. Even it’s conversion into a full length play in 1949 was probably too early for Newman, but I could be wrong.
I love the play perhaps more to read than to watch. I saw a production that Juliard did and though the actors were great it never really took off. It’s Williams in full post-war surrealist mode. |
