Rob then checked the score and told him that it’s written as “woods.” And Sondheim told him that was because “woods” is what the Baker’s Wife is saying. But it was written so the audience could hear either one…

BACK TO ME: I actually think it makes more sense for the Baker’s Wife to say and think “That’s what WOULDS are for” rather than “WOODS,” so I agree with you that Sondheim could have just written the former into his lyrics.
