I was just in NY last weekend and saw all three shows you mentioned. My small backpack was briefly inspected at all three venues and passed the test.

The worst that can happen if your backpack is deemed too big is that they’ll have you check it in. (I do remember an e-mail from one of the theaters saying that if you’re asked to check in a bag, you would
be charged $2.00, but I can’t remember which of the three shows that was.)

Seating at most Broadway theaters is so cramped that you may want to check your bag even if management doesn't require you to do so.
