JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek
Posted by: raydan 11:33 am EDT 08/03/22

We’ve been watching Simmons and Spacek at the top of their acting game in Night Sky on Prime Video.
While the sci fi series is quiet and has a deliberate pace, I found that it only showcases the two leads acting chops. Which makes me consider if in another time what Broadway roles they could have played. In his brief theater career, Simmons was in the revival of Peter Pan and Guys and Dolls, so he does sing. Maybe Vandergelder, Willy Loman?

Simmons is a pro at grumpy. Spacek as Amanda Wingfield or Ma Joad? Take a look at the series, I really love watching them.

I did summer stock with JK in Bigfork, Montana in 1980. They did four musicals a season. He was there for years and played all the leads. He definitely sings. The summer I was there we did Molly Brown, Dames at Sea, Boys from Syracuse, and Can Can. Phenomonal actor and truly great guy.

Some years ago on television, Spacek was interviewed on the red carpet.
I think it was before the Oscars in 2002 when she was nominated for "In the Bedroom".
The interviewer asked Spacek about whether she was ever going to do theater. Spacek quietly asserted that she was a film actress, not a theater actress.

In 2003 I spotted Sissy Spacek at a preview of hairspray and she was on the bathroom line and I yelled to her sissy you should’ve won the Oscar and she turned around and said thank you so much and proceeded to the bathroom. I would take her at her word. She has a very soft voice and I don’t think she’d like to learn about acting in the theater but I do love her.

JK Simmons was part of the very hard-working cast of the entertaining take off on the Ring Cycle (Wagner, not Tolkien :-) ) Das Barbecu and he sang splendidly.

I like your suggestions for these two wonderful actors, raydan. How about pairing them as Big Daddy and Big Mama?

My partner is a huge action/sci fi screen fan and after the first episode he was bored and doubtful about the series. I was immediately drawn to both leads characterizations and now, of course, he’s hooked. I’m a huge Simmons fan but Spacek is right there on the screen showing all sorts of nuances and depth in her character, I find her a fascinating actress. Would love to see her on stage in Driving Miss Daisy, On Golden Pond or Trip to Bountiful. Unfortunately, Prime video has announced there will not be a second season of the series.

This series was a master class in acting. And I am crushed that there won’t be more.

Sissy would have been great in Girl From The North Country, though she would have been great in Mare Winningham's role and I am glad we got to see Mare.

Well there is a brilliant casting idea. Spacek is the only actor I can imagine who might match Winningham in effortless gravitas. And she sings swell, as we know. The Winningham characterization was a small master class in harnessing star power - those two act closers - yet folding into an ensemble.
