The first (or co-launched like Hamilton) national tour of new or revival is 99% of the time a union tour. I kind of use a rule of thumb that if the show is on broadway it is probably still a union tour—but some long running shows might not be as proven by link on the next post below.

I don’t mind non-union shows but I do mind that the ticket price is usually the same or close to it. I know there is a lot going into the weekly costs than just salaries but it does seem like the ticket price should be substantially less for a non union. But it’s more what the market will pay than actually costs.

Absolutely, that's why they're hired. They also aren't treated nearly as well.

Having worked on GREAT and comfy non-eq tours, and some not so great or comfy Equity shows... that's not true. Sure there are some rough tours, but that's true of either union status. It more depends on who your company manager is than anyone.

As to the pay, it also varies, but I've done two non-eq shows where with the Overage shares in contract the actors make more than AEA folks on SETA and Tier contracts.

The overall picture is complicated and more nuanced than one might think.

There's room for both.

Prices are set by local presenters, not the show/producers. And in most markets, non-eq shows I've toured with have had lower ticket prices than Equity shows. Maybe not by much, but usually lower, especially in mid-size markets. SF, however, is almost always expensive no matter the show and that's mostly because the city has much higher costs across the board than other similar markets.
