| I've been a longtime fan of his work, too. I've seen James in so many shows: ''Titanic,'' ''Sweet Smell of Success,'' ''Giant,'' ''Hamilton,'' etc. I even once had the honor of interviewing him for Playbill after he succeeded Norbert Leo Butz in ''Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.'' In my ideal alternate universe, James got to originate the role of Dan in ''Next to Normal'' on Broadway, and won his Tony Award. (And, yes, I first saw James do it Off-Broadway at Second Stage (2008), with Alice Ripley and Aaron Tveit. That was the perfect cast!) |

| Soooo jealous. I’ve never seen him live. But he’s on my CD player constantly—was just listening to GIANT yesterday. Oh, I love that score. Laura in LA |

| I think James could well have won the Tony for Next to Normal if the Tony Administration Committee hadn't made their bizarre rulings about the three actors playing the title role in Billy Elliot, who won that year. Alice Ripley was so dominant in that cast that I didn't realize how large a role Dan, her husband is. Several years later, I saw a local production where the lead actress wasn't very good and also played the role emphasizing the depression aspect, so her performance was very small and a bit closed off. So that production became in large part about Dan's reactions to his wife's situation. He was more emotional than she was. It was unusual but it worked. | |

| The 2009 Tony ruling allowing the 3 boys in ''Billy Elliot'' to compete as one for Best Actor is one of the worst rulings in recent memory. The boys each did 2 or 3 shows a week, as opposed to their adult rivals, who (I believe) were doing 8 a week. That's not a fair comparison. Luckily, the Tonys were wise enough NOT to repeat that mistake when ''Matilda'' petitiioned for 4 girls to share a Best Actress nomination. That said, James couldn't have won the Tony for ''Next to Normal'' because he was starring in ''Shrek the Musical.'' So J. Robert Spencer wound up playing Dan on Broadway instead. Both Spencer and James lost to the ''Billy'' boys. But James would return to play Dan after Spencer left the show. ''Next to Normal'' spoiler ahead! ... Spencer was very good, but to me, James still owns the part. I loved ''Next to Normal'' and saw it many times. I even caught its earlier incarnation, ''Feeling Electric.'' .... But one of the most haunting scenes I'll never forget is Diana, finally departing the house (''Anyway, I'm leaving ...''). After years of struggling to keep his family together, Dan sits suddenly alone, feeling betrayed and devastated (''I am the one who loved you. I am the one who stayed ...''). Then the ghost of their teenaged son, Gabe, appears, and Dan finally acknowledges him, and they embrace singing ''I am the one who loved you ...'' Especially in James' and Tveit's hands, that father-and-son scene always moved me to tears. |

| I agree with your take on the show, however Mr. James would have been ineligible anyway since he didn't open the Broadway version of the show, doing Shrek instead. Similarly, he didn't transfer with Hamilton in favor of Something Rotten. Like Linda Lavin, he is a terrifically talented performer who leaves award-winning roles for others in his wake. | |

| Well, except that neither Dan nor King George led to Tony awards for the actors who took over those parts. And James was nominated for Tonys for both Shrek and Something Rotten. So he left Tony nominated roles in order to take on other Tony nominated roles. | |

| And just to add to the analogy between Lavin and James: Lavin won a Tony for ''Broadway Bound'' (1987); James has yet to win his Tony. | |
