I think James could well have won the Tony for Next to Normal if the Tony Administration Committee hadn't made their bizarre rulings about the three actors playing the title role in Billy Elliot, who won that year. Alice Ripley was so dominant in that cast that I didn't realize how large a role Dan, her husband is. Several years later, I saw a local production where the lead actress wasn't very good and also played the role emphasizing the depression aspect, so her performance was very small and a bit closed off. So that production became in large part about Dan's reactions to his wife's situation. He was more emotional than she was. It was unusual but it worked.
