I was knocked out of my seat last night by this stage production of Steel Magnolias. I was only familiar with the story from seeing the '89 film a couple of times. The play is much better -- the relationships between the 6 women are explored with more depth and poignance plus there is a lot more detail about their collective lives. The laughs are plentiful throughout the 2-1/2 hours with a emotionally draining final scene which left several audience members audibly sobbing. The cast at Drury Lane Oakbrook is full of Chicago area veterans like Susie McMonagle, Amy J. Carle, Elizabeth Ledo, and others.

Unfortunately, there are only two performances remaining, this afternoon and tomorrow. If you live anywhere near Oakbrook Terrace, have the time, and want to see a solid, classic play, I strongly recommend this production of Steel Magnolias. Goldstar is still offering substantially discounted tickets for the last two showings.

BTW, the scenic design is absolutely stunning with Truvy's beauty salon in the foreground and her attached, very detailed Cape Cod type (I think) home in the rear.
