I think part of the problem is that Miranda is not a character who wants to sing.

Tevye wants to sing. Glinda and Elphaba both want to sing. Even like, Louise in Gypsy, HAS to sing.

Miranda doesn't want to sing. Andy probably doesn't want to either. Not without drastically changing the property.

Miranda is not a character who wants to sing.

Miranda is walking a tightrope 24/7, knowing that the entire world is clamoring to see her fall. Anyone with that much internal pressure has plenty to sing about.

But that doesn’t mean they want to sing. Miranda’s great moment of pathos in the film is when Andy sees that her private life is a mess, and we see how much it hurts Miranda to be seen in this way. Her greatest fear is being vulnerable, of letting her mask down, of, well, singing.

I agree. I sense a shortfall in imagination. Miranda has a famous movie-defining monologue on film, a form not known for speechifying, characters expected to show not tell. She runs staff meetings. She expresses herself verbally.

We can debate that but it’s a done deal. This is a show needing transformational thinking, not stage duplication of a screenplay with songs inserted, as the smart Theatermania review suggests was the concept. After Pretty Woman, Tootsie, Doubtfire, we expect more. The track record of all three suggests it’s required.

Miranda doesn’t ‘sing’.

I agree with that observation, but I am surprised that didn't attempt to give her a song that she would sing in private when her guard is down.

There's that moment in the film where we see Miranda in her inner sanctum. She seems vulnerable and it's somewhat unsettling. It seems that would be the moment to attempt one good emotional release for Miranda. The lady's obviously got some issues. Isn't there a song in there somewhere?

Maybe she needs a “Liaisons”-type
spoken-more-than-sung number, perhaps something similarly witty, nostalgic (“What ever happened to class?”), and matter-of-fact.

This puts me in mind of the show I saw this weekend at Arena Stage, “American Prophet,” a bio-musical about Frederick Douglass.

In the second act Abraham Lincoln is a character, and he leads big anthem-like, full-company numbers. If ever a character “doesn’t want to sing,” I think it’s Lincoln…

That queen loved to debate and give speeches, I think she very much wants to sing.
