I saw the original Broadway production and was both moved and thoroughly entertained by the show. Both at the time and still now, I really disagree with the oft-mentioned idea that the use of projections hurt the show by taking the focus away from the story. I think they enriched it, especially since the central character is a photographer who for much of the show is reflecting on images and memories from his past. If anything, that element of the production was somewhat groundbreaking or "before its time", given the wide use of photographic and video images in current set and lighting designs.
I also thought Champion's choreography and staging were excellent, especially in the "Without Me" and "Life of the Party" numbers. |
