That nickname, though, predates his theater career by many years. He got it after appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1965.

The headline was ''Football Goes Show Biz,'' and the famed N.Y. Jets quarterback was shot in Times Square, with the bright lights behind him.

Below is some TV coverage of Namath, being a good sport, when he played Joe Hardy in ''Damn Yankees'' in 1981 at Jones Beach.

Eddie Bracken portrayed Applegate, and Susan Elizabeth Scott was Lola. (There's even a ''Playgram'' for sale at eBay for $8!)

(The last time I saw a Jets QB in a theater setting was when Mark Sanchez, a Broadway fan, introduced ''Memphis'' at the 2010 Tony Awards.)
