Maybe my memory's faulty, but didn't the N.Y. Times once have a policy about which out-of-town shows they'd review? If it hadn't been announced for Broadway, it was fair game. But if it had, the Times would allow the show to work out its kinks before bowing in N.Y. I don't think the Times reviewed ''Paradise Square'' during its Chicago tryout. ... Or does the newsworthiness of a show, like Elton's ''The Devil Wears Prada,'' override that? It's so hard to keep track. The N.Y. Times earlier this year did a feature piece about the making of ''The Karate Kid: The Musical'' in St. Louis, but as far as I know, never reviewed it. But in 2018, Ben Brantley went to review the pre-Broadway tryout of ''Moulin Rouge!'' in Boston and gave it a rave.
