Fred wrote in his review, "Fredrik's mistress, back in another day, was Desiree Armfeldt (Emily Skinner), who experienced fame as an actress but is now relegated to smaller, diminished roles."
Unless they have changed something in the text, Desiree is still a famous actress and still playing leading roles. She is clearly playing the lead in the play that Fredrik and Anne go to see. When Fredrik brings home the theatre tickets, Anne excitedly exclaims, "It's 'Woman of the World,' isn't it? With Desiree Armfeldt! She's on all the posters!" And we see that she is the lead, the title character (the woman of the world), in the excerpt we see from the play. Not only is her name on the posters, an image of her is also on the posters. Anne is excited to see the famous Desiree Armfeldt, at least she is at first. And Desiree will soon go to Helsingborg to play Hedda Gabler. She is a star actress, still in demand, both in comedy and tragedy.
First, Maya Phillips in the Times thinks that Irina Arkadina is a retired actress, and that Masha's parents are Nina's parents. Now this. :) |
