I get your disappointment and hope whoever is cast as a replacement is wonderful. But what makes you say you don’t believe for a minute that they didn’t always know the show would extend?
“The Piano Lesson” was booked into the St. James, a set was built, and by all accounts it took a lot of heavy negotiation to arrange to move it (to another landlord’s theatre) after “Paradise Square” closed and made the Barrymore available. I don’t think it was at all a foregone conclusion that “Into the Woods” would be bringing in the audiences and revenue the way it has. And I’m sure the schedules of the cast made anything more than an eight-week transfer out of the question, until they worked it out with as many as they could. I just don’t see a world in which they were certain this was going to extend, as you suggest.
