I think we are long past the point where "tragedy" can only be defined by its theatrical manifestation. "Tragic" means "very sad". It's not the OED but the online Mexico.com defines it first as:
An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe. |
