| I've compared it -- in schematic purpose if not structural placement -- with Carol Hall's small beauty, "Doatsy Mae" in Best Little Whorehouse. Doatsy is a cafe waitress, but even more than Petra, an observer. Almost invisible as a human being and especially as a young woman. In a show about sex work and erotic self-presentation, the song illustrates yearning for an identity outside of circumstance. |
