| Very compelling new play by the guy who wrote Curious Incident. Intriguing, provocative, even mysterious. A middle-aged woman addresses the audience for about 15 minutes, tells us about her life, makes a mysterious statement. Next we are introduced to 4 groups of individuals. A 20-something heterosexual couple who have recently met. Two young guys who are lovers. An unmarried woman with an unseen small child and her ex-boyfriend. A middle-aged man and 2 younger women he met via a message board. The actress who began the play has an encounter with 3 of the groups, one at a time. Is she the same character from earlier or is she now playing 3 different people? That's the end of act one. Act two does a nice job of tying up all the loose ends from the previous act, answers most questions, and provides us with a satisfying conclusion. Light Falls has been running to sold out crowds for over 5 weeks now. Chris Jones gave it a rave review in the Tribune. Tonight is the final performance. I finally got to see it last night, and it was quite good. I suspect that it will eventually find its way to the New York stage, most likely off-Broadway. |
