|"And for some of them I wanted to give them a chance to shine in roles that aren't what we're used to seeing them in, like Joaquina being fierce. And she's a great age for the Baker's Wife, more than The Witch."
The Narrator originally said that the Witch was "returned to her former state of youth and beauty." Joaquina Kalukango is 33. That is the age Betsy Joslyn, whom some folks still consider the best Witch, was when she was hired as standby in early 1988 and when she first played the role when Peters took a vacation in February 1988. I saw her second performance that week, and she was already fantastic. She was 34 when she took over full time, after having filled in for a couple of weeks between Peters and Rashad. The original main understudy for the role was Suzzanne Douglas, who was 30 at the time. Marin Mazzie had recently turned 28 when she joined the cast as Rapunzel in or around November 1988, and she also became the second Witch understudy, with Joy Franz the first. Mazzie once said that the week she joined the cast, illness was running through the cast and she had to go on as the Witch that first week, without a rehearsal.
Really, it's nice to see a Witch who really can be returned to her former state of youth as well as beauty. :)
