The story I've heard was that Rodgers saw Carroll on some tv variety show and was impressed by her singing a song. He got in touch with her management and decided he wanted to write a show for her. That's the outline of it, but apparently it turned into something closer than that between them personally. Carroll was pretty discreet; she later during the '60s became the first African-American woman with her own tv series who wasn't playing a domestic ("Julia"), so with TVQ ratings, network execs, sponsors to be approved by and morality clauses in contracts even more enforced back then for everyone, she probably had to especially discreet as a tv pioneer to get and keep her job,
