| Equally true is the fact that I, at least, find myself responding more favourably to actors I eschewed in my youth and, conversely, reexamining actors whom I once revered. I have a much higher tolerance now for "mannered" acting, provided the material is appropriate. I am actually surprised discovering the depth of the playing in a lot of classic Hollywood films of the '30s and '40s: underneath the arch, stylised delivery is often a very emotionally open soul. James Stewart in particular never fails to move me even in light fare like The Shop Around the Corner. |
