Thanks Wayman for sharing this article. I really loved "13" onstage. I remember hearing the score highlights, for the first time, at one of that summer's preview lunchtime concerts in Bryant Park. (Have those started up again? Or are they another covid casualty?) Whereas many shows sang to tracks for their park performances, "13" had a kickin' live band and the cast was on fire. Since the tickets were so reasonable (they often had a $25 deal going), I saw the production many times. Fascinating that as the creators worked on the show during previews, it would evolve differently night to night. I much preferred when it was performed in two acts, and Graham Philips got a great Act I finale song, which was cut when the show moved to a no intermission format.
I'm so glad the Netflix movie will introduce JRB's work to more people. It was quite frustrating to consider that Disney's mediocre "High School Musical" with its hodgepodge of different seemingly random songwriters (with resulting lack of tone and integrity, unrelated to the piece but shoehorned into it) was super popular, while over at the Royale a super talented cast (Aaron Simon Gross, Ariana, Al Calderon, Allie Trimm, Graham, others) was performing a beautifully crafted, witty, exciting score that related to and enhanced the story-the way a REAL score should. They created something far better than "HSM"-and "13" deserved the larger audience. Hopefully the new adaptation (whatever its plusses or minuses) will remedy that. And, as with all adaptations, it will send many theatre kids back to discover the original (via the recording, various boots, local productions, etc...)
