| I am confused by the sketch of Jo Mielziner. Is it your sense that this is something preliminary that was intended to inform the (interior) action of the play? I've seen the play at least 4-5 times over the years (probably more) and none show anything like this. I can envision that 1st floor above the ground level as the landing outside the apartment but the type of ladder in the sketch would not seem feasible even for a healthy person. I don't have time to dig deeper into the ones I have seen right now but will try to do so later today if I can. (My elevator comment was just a bit of me being silly.) [1st floor in Europe at least means the first above ground. Could that be the case here?] |
