I also think she'd be great in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. She has the talent, presence, and command the role requires. Yet I feel there's really no reason to see her in an Encores production of THE ACT though I agree it's an interesting thought. Basically, THE ACT is "an evening with" type of vehicle for whoever undertakes the role. I saw the show in Los Angeles before it traveled to Broadway. It was not well received by critics there (nor in San Francisco where it previously played) yet Liza got glowing reviews. It was Liza in her prime and she worked it like the trouper she was. It had a predictable script about a celebrity named Michelle Craig who was premiering her new nightclub act. In between songs, there were flashbacks to her troubled life and that's where the problems began. They were not only boring but corny even back in 1977. The score did indeed have some fine Kander and Ebb numbers obviously tailored to Minnelli's talents. For me though, the "Little Lamb" of the score is a ballad in the second act titled, "There When I Need Him" which I had hoped they would've replaced before the NY opening. I did not see the show in NY so changes in the book could have been made that I'm not aware of. I do think it would be fun seeing Debose performing the show's songs but I really think the book would be as disappointing now as it was back then.
