| It's a not-quite good enough show (particularly in the Broadway version, which had a not-good-enough number for the Dragon (the substitue number come up with for the tour is an improvement). Shrek himself is somewhat marginalised in the score - the writing for Fiona is miles better, and Farquaad tends to steal any scenes left over. The ensemble material for the supporting fairy-story characters is perfuctory. The nadir of the show is Shrek's introspective solos in act two which drag the whole show to a halt. There are things I like in the show but it feels like what it is, an unnecessary brand extension, rather than a show that needed to be on stage. |
