| yes, I can. It's one interpretation. I just thought his footnote was too definitive, or reductive. He gives a lot of definitive assessments of shows (as does Mary) in the book, but I chose to take issue with the one where I thought his perspective was too limited. To both of our points, I think, there are thousands of lesbians who loved Harriet the Spy as an early butch role model and thousands more kids who loved the book and never saw that angle. (The book's author was also discovered and published by Nordstrom). Anyway the footnotes in the book are very enjoyable so it's ridiculous of me to quibble with one because I don't agree with its assessment 100%. And sort of on the subject, when I got to his hilarious footnote on Moss Hart ("Moss Hart and Larry Hart were unrelated, although bother were gay, as anyone but Hart's wife, Kitty Carlisle, could tell" ) I laughed aloud although I thought, "wouldn't bisexual would be more accurate?" But not as funny. And also I am hardly an expert there! |
