| I'm always very happy to say that I think Merrily is a staggering, uniquely effective musical... in its original version. I don't care how many people think it didn't work that way... it absolutely is worse and doesn't work to me now because they have cut and lost the reasons why it needed to exist at all, and what made it so good. It is now a soap opera. I very much, truly loathed Maria Friedman's production that was filmed and broadcast from London. Terrible, terrible staging, and acting, and design... coupled with the worst version of the show's text/score. I am so sad this is the production coming to NYC that will bring attention back to this show for it to be "reconsidered", being done not only soon after Sondheim's death but at a major theater and with an incredible notable cast. The likelihood of it moving to Broadway I think is high. Unless she finds a whole new and better way to direct it, and this cast is a vast improvement (even the amazing Jenna Russell was over the top and unbelievable/unlikeable)... I can't imagine liking this one either. But I will absolutely see it at least once, and hope for the best. |
