I saw the recording of the Broadway SHREK, and it was one of those cases of, “Oh, well, I have this DVD; might as well watch it..” So I went in, not much enthused, and was entirely won over. Is it a classic? Of course not. But I had fun throughout, much to my surprise.
Fiona is a great character, and I absolutely love the song where she grows, alone in her tower, from child to teen to adult. Her isolation, her discovery of a refuge in books, and the way that shapes her character, are perfectly in keeping with other musical theatre heroines: Marian Paroo, Fosca, Amalia Balash, R&H’s Cinderella, and Disney’s Belle (I mean, come on—she starts changing her mind about the Beast because he’s got a freakin’ library!).
