| I had no idea that this was a retread of the Maria Friedman production. No, Mary, "make it like it was" is NOT always the best answer. This production was also mounted at the Huntington Theatre in Boston several years ago, with the same Frank (didn't like him at all) and Charley (pretty good), a new Mary (Eden Espinosa, and very good), and a bevy of local top drawer Boston actors and musicians (terrific all around, and IMO the real reason to see that production). But the set, with its horrid big looming "negative space" central white wall is a terrible design that tended at times to suck the energy out of the visuals. And really, especially since the London production was made available on HD and streaming, it's been seen by many - so I really wish there would be a fresh take on the whole show. That said, the 3 current stars should be great, and absolutely Jonathan Groff should be miles better than Mark Umbers, the original London Frank. I just don't really know if I really want to see this same-old particular production yet again, even for the 3 of them. |
