Although it's never going to be considered a classic, I do think the material is better than not-good-enough.
For me, the problem was the costume design that rendered all the characters to look like Theme Park mascots, and really obscured their humanity, which hindered my ability to connect with them. I have much preferred subsequent regional productions were the costumes are more suggestive (think Seussical) and not so overwhelming, which IMHO, helped a lot at letting the performances, story and material shine.
