Clearly, she has skills.
I wonder if she can master the lower East Side “jewish” and Yiddish inflections that were part of Fanny Brice (see her films) and seem written into the songs. I wonder if she has the ear for it. Or is that not politically correct to have Fanny sound like Fanny probably sounded? Lea seems to sing with a studied, mid-Atlantic accent. Get a dialect coach for the kid. It will take the self-consciousness out of her singing.
I would suggest somebody take her aside and let her do a couple of full runs of songs and text with an outrageous accent. Just to break her of her good singing delivery habits.
At least Benko has some of that sound.
It’s the character. It’s the minority sound Brice took with her onto the stage.
Or…is the soundtrack behind these clips from a runthrough of the song on “Glee,” in which case she might not’ve been trying to do Fanny Brice.
PS: I just don’t believe Streisand in her early-Funny-Girl interviews where she says she didn’t study Brice. Or, if she didn’t, then somebody like Robbins grafted the accent on to her. Heck, as early as Ann Bancroft’s Gittel Mosca, people know from various urban-ethnic accents…and loved them.
