| I wonder if she can master the lower East Side “jewish” and Yiddish inflections that were part of Fanny Brice (see her films) and seem written into the songs. I wonder if she has the ear for it. Or is that not politically correct to have Fanny sound like Fanny probably sounded? I think it's hard to say what Fanny Brice sounded like. She performed in a number of different personas. Her "Baby Snooks" doesn't sound particularly Yiddish and neither do her jazz inflected styles that she used for songs like "My Man". Early recordings like "Sheik of Avenue B." are definitely meant to be novelty numbers in a Yiddish accent but to my ear it also sounds influenced by the vaudeville "Dutch" act which was a parody of the American German immigrant. So... lots of different theatricalized ethnic tropes and styles melting into one another. As for what the young off stage Fanny Brice sounded like, who knows. Maybe you could do some intense research with recorded speech archives. But my guess is that the Yiddish inflected English of the Lower East Side was very diverse as it came from different countries as well as probably having different class distinctions in how it was spoken. I doubt if audiences heard it today it would register as meaning "Yiddish". From the clip I saw Julie Benko used a basic nyc borough accent that used to be everywhere and is now getting harder and harder to hear. |
