Casting Funny Girl

Without going into who was cast in the current revival or has been cast, I had one of those middle of the night thoughts.

Based upon recordings of the real Fanny Brice, would she have succeeded in the role as it is currently written? I know that she would have had no issues with the humor or ethnic type music. However, I’m not convinced that she could have put across the songs that could use a ‘big’ voice.

Of course I realize that the play’s Fanny Brice is more fictional than actual. I find it interesting to ponder if she could play herself on stage as written.
