I think the lack of close-ups has to do with Fanny Brice pushing 40 when the movie was made as well as being unconventional looking.
The close-ups of the men show them charmed by and trying to flirt with Fanny to get her attention. This is to establish that Fanny, despite not being a traditional beauty, is attractive and appealing to men.
Especially when she sings.
