As you put "big" in quotation marks, I'm not sure if you meant it in a way other than volume. Fanny Brice clearly had a bigger voice than Streisand in terms of volume and being able to project unaided into a large space. Of course, if Streisand had started in an era before Broadway shows were amplified, she might have learned how to do it. But then she wouldn't have sounded quite like the Streisand who was born in 1942, by which time some Broadway shows were being amplified.
Brice also certainly had the range, although as noted by others below, she would not have sounded like Streisand. Brice's voice had more of a legit underpinning than Streisand's.
The song that might have given her trouble, although not because of its range, is "Don't Rain on My Parade." It's very 1960s. She might not have had an easy time wrapping her voice around its rhythms. But that's a might. She also might not have had any trouble. Or some trouble, but she would have conquered it.
I think she would have had no trouble with anything else in the score. Well, maybe parts of "I'm the Greatest Star," but I wouldn't be sure.
I love her singing. |
