I had the opportunity to see A Little Night Music at the Barrington Stage on Wednesday night As I went to pick up my tickets at the box office I saw a notice that Emily Skinner was out and Sarah Goeke, her understudy filling in. Big disappointment. But whaddya going to do? Hope she had a good reason for being out the second week of a 4 week run.
It was difficult to fully judge the production without the highly praised star. Goeke was ok but not right for the part. Too young and contemporary without the world-weary sophistication that Desiree must have.. She did a credible job with the big number but it’s a hard one to mess up. Just not right for Desiree and this impacted the whole production.
Julianne Boyd’s swan song was certainly credible but somewhat under powered. Some of that was of course due to the budgetary restraints of regional theater. The orchestra small to the point of barely existing. The sets and costumes were underwhelming, but the sound design allowed us to hear every word of the score. The cast was solid. Jason Danielly in fine voice but too boyish for Frederick. ( I sadly thought of what Marin Mazzie would have done with role of Desiree and how different Danielly’s performance might have been) The juveniles were fine but the standouts in the cast were Sierra Borgess as the countess who nailed Every Day a Little Death (I kept wishing she were playing Desiree) and Mary Peil as Mme. Armfeldt who did a riveting version of Liaisons which has become one of my favorite Sondheim songs. The ensemble moments were some of the best in the show.
Of course, any opportunity to see Night Music is to be treasured and all in all I was glad to have seen this production flaws and all
