As Miss Johns's birthday is in October, she was only 49 when she played the role. I know it is only a one year difference, but I just wanted to set the record straight about her age. Judi Dench was 60 when she played the role in 1995 in London. Dorothy Tutin had been 59 and Jean Simmons 46 in the two previous London productions of the show.
I worked on a production of Night Music in the mid-1990s. Dorothy Stanley left SHOW BOAT on Broadway to be our Desiree. Hal Prince informed her that he thought she was too young to play the part. She told him she was flattered, but that it was biologically possible for her to be Fredrika's mother where as some of the actresses who played the role would be a stretch. Incidentally, our Madame Armfeldt was Jane White, now featured in Mary Rodgers' SHY for her work in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS. |
