| Henrik. Who is Henrik? Oh, the lawyer’s son. The one who mumbles. Mark Lambert was 21 making Cariou a12 year old dad. I saw both Cariou and Daniels dozens of times in the role. Hair and makeup took care of the visuals. However, there is a resonance to their voices that was convincingly older sounding than their biological ages, speaking as well as singing, which made them convincing in the role. Having seen George Lee Andrews as Frid so frequently I couldn’t imagine that he’d be a convincing Frederick. Again. He has that deep resonance in his voice which he used to project age. The thing about Glynis as Desiree, as in any good portrayal of the role, was that her presentation of Desiree was seemingly ageless. Perhaps not literally. On stage she was fortyish. I have seen a number of different actors in the role (disappointingly not Dame Judi), Glynis was absolutely convincing in each of the different aspects of the character and how she interacted with the fellow characters. The snapping between Glynis and Hermoine (on stage and off) was still crackling right through to the end of the run. Has Emily Skinner returned to the role? I’m curious to hear reports about her take. She certainly has the talent, but has she had enough time yet to develop her performance? Desiree must not only be able to sing ‘that song’ she must convince us in terms of her relationships with each of the other main characters. I apologize for going on at this great length. ALNM was the first musical of which I went to multiple times. I could appreciate how the same actor could alter a performance from one day to the next or how the dynamic of a scene changes with a different actor in a role. ALNM was the vehicle that truly inspired my love of theater, and you never forget your first time. |
