The Broadway production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was my first Sondheim show and it was magical. The only other production I've seen was one in Los Angeles that starred John McMartin and Lois Nettleton. Both were fine in their roles yet I had so looked forward to seeing the previously announced Lee Remick as Desiree. Unfortunately, due to health problems, she was unable to appear yet I always wondered what her take on the role would've been.

Another actress I would've liked to have seen was Elsa Lanchester as Madame Armfeldt. For my birthday, my partner surprised me by saying we had been invited to dinner by a friend of his but didn't tell me who it was. He knocked on the door and to my surprise Ms. Lanchester greeted us. She prepared what she called her "benevolent stew" and then did a hilarious bit about what you could do with the stew meat once it was in your mouth. During dinner, she mentioned she had been approached to play Madame Armfeldt in the tour production of the show that starred Jean Simmons (the role was later given to Margaret Hamilton). I told her she'd be wonderful in the part to which she strongly replied, "I create roles. I don't follow another actress's portrayal." A pity she felt that way.
