My oversight in not mentioning Johns' in that Los Angeles production, Portenpope. I also thought Remick would've been an interesting choice due to her close relationship with Sondheim who I imagine would've guided her in the role.
As for Ms. Lanchester, yes I spent the whole evening sitting at her feet listening to her many stories which she seemed to enjoy sharing. I feel as a young person at the time, she was quite amused that I took such an interest in her life. She spoke of her relationships with Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, especially their fleeing Nazi Germany months after Hitler had come into power. Over the fireplace hung a huge oil painting of Charles Laughton. She spoke of him with such loving devotion. It was quite touching. She also mentioned a book that was being released about him and how she admired the author for the way her husband's interest in "the boys" (as she worded it) was handled. My partner later told me she had once said there was an imaginary line in their home that she would never trespass which I found rather sad. Yet it didn't seem to diminish her affection for him. Yes, I could've spent days listening to her many stories. |
