I think it’s also surprising because the play is quite upfront about being aware it’s a play. The fourth wall is broken continually throughout the evening, and by the end of the show, even the nature of the story being a riff on Hamlet is remarked upon, carefully considered, and ultimately challenged. Reality isn’t meant to be reflected in this show.
One thing not mentioned here that deserves a shout out is just how delightful it is to see Billy Eugene Jones having the time of his life in the dual role of the two brothers. Often cast for his gravitas, Jones is such a satisfying comedian, and it’s great to watch him tear it up on stage. |
