Trevor Nunn's staging originated at London's Menier Chocolate Factory - which is far smaller than the main house at Barrington St - both in terms of stage and seating capacity (c 180). The seat and staging worked very well in that space. The problem was, rather like the current Funny Girl which also began there, that they didn't scale it up, nor re-orchestrate it, when it came to NY - so it all felt a bit threadbare.
In London Desiree was played by the now Emmy award-winning Hannah Waddingham, who was only 34 at the time which made for a slightly peculiar reading of some of the lines/lyrics. Frederika was played by a pre-drama school Jessie Buckley. |
