"and had played Desiree at Chichester only a year or two earlier"
Actually the Chichester production was about six years before the NT production (it also came into the West End for a short run) and Desiree was played by Dorothy Tutin.
There was, however, a studio recording made around the same time which featured Sian Phillips as Desiree - with Susan Hampshire and Eric Flynn from the Chichester cast (the latter moving from Count Carl Magus to Frederick). It also included Elizabeth Welsh as Mme Armfeldt (Lila Kedrova had played the part at Chichester) and Maria Friedman played Petra.
The Chichester production had Alexander Hanson as Henrik, who then went on to play his father in the 2008 London and 2009 Broadway revivals. |
