| Considering how long the article is, I was expecting more in-depth analysis. One thing I found unhelpful is that they compared a shortened 2021-2022 season to presumably a full-length season pre-pandemic, although they never actually say this. I don't follow classical music or opera, so I don't have a clue when their 2021-2022 seasons actually started. For example, they say that the Philharmonic had 120 concerts pre-pandemic and 80 this past season, but if the past season was only 8 months, that has different significance than if the past season was 12 months. They also lump together the entire 2021-2022 season, when I think a more helpful analysis is looking at the past 3-5 months when things were closer to normal in terms of performance schedules. It's interesting that the old standbys (Chicago, Phantom, etc) look like they're only down about 10% in gross from the equivalent week in 2019, but the newer shows like Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hadestown are struggling more. Hamilton is down about 25% but that could also be affected by the Disney+ release. Harry Potter is outperforming equivalent weeks in 2019, so the consolidation to 1 play seems to have been a good move. |
