The other problem with Ashford's take on Lauren is that everyone else seemingly thought it was written that way. When women started using "The History Of Wrong Guys" as an audition song, I wanted to tear my hair out from the awful Ashford impressions I heard...
Very much to her credit, one of my former students, Lauren Chapman, who was in the Broadway company and the tour, and covered the role of Lauren, did her own honest take on the song. Still quirky, but without it being the "point" of the performance. |
