Terry Gilliam's production of Into the Woods Reviews? Info?
Posted by: Glamourboy 11:52 am EDT 08/24/22

Terry Gilliam's production of Into The Woods seemingly opened August 17th, but I haven't been able to find a single review. Has anyone seen anything other than the photos or interview? Also, I've never seen a production at this theater. I am going to be in Paris two weeks after the production closes and I'm wondering the chances of the play extending or moving. Even though Gilliam is under fire for his statements, I would think that his production would be of interest. I'm also assuming that since there is a current production of Into The Woods on Broadway there is no chance of his version traveling here anytime soon, right?

Have not seen any reviews and I'm beginning to doubt the certainty that this will have a West End run. The Royal Bath production is co-produced by "Scenario Two Productions" which is headed by John Berry, the former director of the ENO who it appears is now a well paid consultant to Russia's Bolshoi Theater.

The more I think about Gilliam's remarks that theater needs to be "braver" the more it bothers me. I think he means the bravery to put up with his pronouncements and less about his work itself which, though dark and politically pointed, is usually quite broad and universal.

Are the opera houses that banned their biggest ticket sellers like Netrebko over her ties to Putin "brave" for losing the money or "cowardly" for bending to political animus? It was probably more a necessity than a personal act of conviction. I still think losing that money is braver than supporting talented jerks who trample through the realities of 2022 in the name of free speech.

Yes, Gilliam seems to feel that bravery means letting him say whatever he wants, rather than having the bravery to stand up to a famous Hollywood director on behalf of an institution’s staff and community of artists. I for one applaud the Old Vic’s bravery.
