Have not seen any reviews and I'm beginning to doubt the certainty that this will have a West End run. The Royal Bath production is co-produced by "Scenario Two Productions" which is headed by John Berry, the former director of the ENO who it appears is now a well paid consultant to Russia's Bolshoi Theater.
The more I think about Gilliam's remarks that theater needs to be "braver" the more it bothers me. I think he means the bravery to put up with his pronouncements and less about his work itself which, though dark and politically pointed, is usually quite broad and universal.
Are the opera houses that banned their biggest ticket sellers like Netrebko over her ties to Putin "brave" for losing the money or "cowardly" for bending to political animus? It was probably more a necessity than a personal act of conviction. I still think losing that money is braver than supporting talented jerks who trample through the realities of 2022 in the name of free speech. |
