I don't know the answer to your question, though I'm assuming if some large theatre planned a big revival and approached the estates of Sondheim and Furth about updating the script is probably the best way we'd see a new version of the show. No clue what the Off Broadway revival has planned but perhaps they're thinking about tweaking the script?
I will say that I've seen a production of the show that used the revised script, which I believe better fleshes out Frank and Gussie's characters with the addition of "Growing Up" and it's reprises, but also added back the graduation scenes to book end the show and I thought it worked better than any other production I've seen. So perhaps a slight tweak is all that's needed? |
